With the continuous development of the manufacturing industry, stainless steel materials are widely used in product processing. Choosing the right cutting tools for stainless steel is an important factor in ensuring efficient cutting. Considering the characteristics of stainless steel cutting, the tool material should have good heat resistance, excellent wear resistance, and minimal affinity with stainless steel.

Turning of Stainless Steel:

Characteristics of Stainless Steel Turning:

  • Severe work hardening during machining.

  • High plastic deformation, high thermal strength, high cutting resistance, and difficulty in chip curling and breaking.

  • Large friction between the chips and the tool, resulting in significant cutting heat.

  • Chips tend to stick, forming built-up edge. This leads to tool adhesion, diffusion wear, moon-shaped depressions on the tool's cutting edge, and small chipping and notching. Stainless steel carbide particles have high hardness and directly contact the tool during cutting, causing tool abrasion to worsen.

  • Selection of Turning Tools:

Currently, commonly used materials for stainless steel cutting are high-speed steel and cemented carbide. Since high-speed steel can only maintain its cutting performance below 600°C, it is not suitable for WNMG Insert high-speed cutting. Cemented carbide, on the other hand, exhibits better heat resistance and wear resistance than high-speed steel, making it more suitable for stainless steel machining.
